Personal Trainer Jannette Brodersen of JB Fitnez

Posted on 23rd April 2017 in lifestyle

Working inside of a gym is usually a fun experiment. Most gyms are made to be rugged and indestructible, with each different piece of equipment laid out in a grid to maximize space. Some are made well lit, many have zero windows, and most have mirrors everywhere.

Jannette Brodersen (fb, instagram), of JB Fitnez came to me and said she had a private gym of a new apartment building to shoot in with an eager client, Federico (instagram), to work with. Awesome. Yes. I’m game.

Curious, I asked her for photos of the room, and when I saw the floor to ceiling windows I knew this was going to be a well lit shoot, if nothing else!

Jannette is a personal trainer, yoga instructor and flamenco dancer. For this shoot, I had Jannette take Federico through a workout.

Olivia Martin & Her Bassoon

Posted on 19th April 2017 in portraits & headshots

Perhaps it’s just the music I’m listening to right now, but when a friend that I’ve shot before in a creative setting comes to me for some headshots (typically photographs used to get gigs and promote things in print), it makes me incredibly grateful. To me it says, more then with just words of flattery, that they really like what magic we make. I could luxuriate in this feeling forever.

Olivia Martin (fb) is a bassoonist based in Vancouver, BC, who works with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and Kamloops Symphony Orchestra (and a lot more that I’ve forgotten). Anyways, she had a very big solo (she said over 20 minutes long) with the Kamloops Orchestra playing a concerto by Mozetich and wanted to get some West Coast soul into her headshots that were going to be on the flyers and schedule and online and everywhere everywhere. So, she said: “Ned, I’m coming in on the ferry, let’s drive to some beaches and find some soul?!”

Done.

It was a bit cold and she was a trooper and I was in my warm jacket.

Spring in Shawnigan Lake

Posted on 11th April 2017 in explored, nature, wandering

Shawnigan Lake is where I’ve been calling home for a while now. It’s a beautiful community along the Victoria Watershed, just north of the Malahat and Victoria, on Vancouver Island, in beautiful British Columbia.

Being an outdoors man, naturally I’ve taken to wandering with my camera in hand. Every month I get a collection of wander-clickings I’ve captured, and if you follow any of my social medias, you’ve maybe seen some of these images pop up at times. You know, when the mood hits.

Ever since I was first exploring these lands with my parents on summer vacations of y’or, I have always been incredibly fascinated with these old growth forests. They are unlike any other I’ve experienced, which isn’t to say they are better, but just that they have a special place in my heart that started when I was young. The giant roots crossing single-track trials covered in cedar branches and fir needles, with oregon grape and salal flanking as I meander up and down valleys. Oh, the depths of canyons found within trunks of a thousand year old fir trees.

This is what I’ve come upon.
