Thug Dance (day 1577)

I’m an East Van thug
I’ve got dimes for your eyes
I wrote empty lines
For shoes your size.

Beats’n’bustin
And breakin signs,
I’ve locked this hood
On playing this rhyme

Crack crack
Break a ga-lack
Break your mother fuckin’ knees
Smack; my attack

From Hasting’s to Oppenheimer
To Railtown smokin’ crack
These pimps are all small time
Knock’n at my back.

I’ve got thugs in my pocket
From Strathcona to Clark
Commercial to Main,
Remember sucker, East Van’s the land

All you rebels cryin’ loud
My shit’s locked tight
Now strap on your booties,
Baby, let’s dance!

Graceful Lake | Ava Lure

Posted on 7th September 2015 in fashion, lifestyle

The first time I saw Ava Lure I held my breath as she danced her graceful heart upon her soon-to-be-discarded sleeves as one of the members of Pandora & the Locksmiths (fb, tumblr), a collective of burlesque dancers, musicians, and vocalists. Every single time from then on it keeps getting better: more emotion, more grace, more connection, more fire.

I was flattered when Ava contacted me about doing a shoot with her. She said: “Hey Ned, I have been pretty inspired by this image for a while and wanted to see what you thought about it.” And that’s how it all started.

We headed out to Sasamat Lake, a place I head to on those incredibly hot days in Vancouver when I needed some water to jump into, which has this slightly weird but totally awesome cement pier that goes across the lake. The perfect place to dive in from and also the perfect location for THIS.

We timed everything almost perfect. When we got there, we were the only people on the pier and this lasted for most of the shoot (except one very long line of kids from a summer camp). Just as we finished the last set and I was changing into my swim trunks to jump in, we were immediately surrounded by about 10 people!

Oh summertime, how good you are.

Sorceress’ | East Vanity Parlour

Posted on 17th August 2015 in fashion

The East Vanity Parlour (fb) is filled with some badass, scissor wielding, bike riding, updo styling babes, located in the heart of East Van’s Mount Pleasant district. I’ve had the good fortune to get to know some of these girls over the years, and when Kristi (Owner)(fb) and Sophie (fb) approached me to work on a project with them I was like:

“You kidding me?! Yes I’d love to shoot with you two!”

They spent the morning working over a handful of ladies with bones and dye, pulling props from their large collections of the ornate to style with, and by the time I arrived, everybody was looking… well… sorceress’ish.

It was Kristi who suggested the location. I had never seen it before, but when she said it was a giant tree fort in the middle of the forest I was sold. It’s quite funny how after this shoot, this location has come up about 3 times when planning shoots with others. Maybe I’ll return, but it’s still too soon right now.

I really wish I could have somebody like one of these two to be my partner for every shoot that I do. Having a stylist would totally up my photography game, big time. So if you’re out there and looking to team up with a photographer, send me a hello!

This is what we created.

East Van Candy Gangster | Nite Mare

Posted on 20th June 2015 in fashion, lifestyle

Nite Mare (fb, instagram, previous posts) is a dancer in the local burlesque troop The Lost Girls (previous posts, fb), regularly causing crowds to lose their minds.

I thought about laying down some sick gangster southcentral LA lyrics as an intro to this photoshoot, but decided that, after all, I am not a gangster. SO, you get that glorious song from CeCile (soundcloud player below playing it).

This shoot was done in the projects of East Vancouver, and yes, it was rather convenient that the chain link fence AND the candy store matched perfectly with her hair (including bow), dress, rainbow unikorn shorts, purse, and bandana.

Dreaming with Lu Lee

Posted on 12th March 2015 in fashion, lifestyle, risque

In a Gaze (day 1378)

Slip sideways with a fuzzy dream
And carry those loose blossoms
That follow your footsteps
With a delicate clutch,
Simply to answer questions
From far away strangers
With elegant movement,
Shared back in a gaze.

As always, Lu Lee (fb, archives) has made simple delight as elegant as a dream.

This shoot was done in the alleys of EastVan. Alleys in any downtown area are a little interesting to shoot in; it doesn’t really offer the same clean style one gets from shooting in a studio with a seamless, but I kind of like things being a little rough around the edges. However, shooting in an alley in a business district during working hours, it’s funny how many businesses really do use their alleys and loading docks. Who’d a thought?

I liked finding that Porsche sitting in the parking lot, conveniently.
