Graceful Lake | Ava Lure

Posted on 7th September 2015 in fashion, lifestyle

The first time I saw Ava Lure I held my breath as she danced her graceful heart upon her soon-to-be-discarded sleeves as one of the members of Pandora & the Locksmiths (fb, tumblr), a collective of burlesque dancers, musicians, and vocalists. Every single time from then on it keeps getting better: more emotion, more grace, more connection, more fire.

I was flattered when Ava contacted me about doing a shoot with her. She said: “Hey Ned, I have been pretty inspired by this image for a while and wanted to see what you thought about it.” And that’s how it all started.

We headed out to Sasamat Lake, a place I head to on those incredibly hot days in Vancouver when I needed some water to jump into, which has this slightly weird but totally awesome cement pier that goes across the lake. The perfect place to dive in from and also the perfect location for THIS.

We timed everything almost perfect. When we got there, we were the only people on the pier and this lasted for most of the shoot (except one very long line of kids from a summer camp). Just as we finished the last set and I was changing into my swim trunks to jump in, we were immediately surrounded by about 10 people!

Oh summertime, how good you are.

Light Angels | Leiah Luz

Posted on 30th June 2015 in After Dark, art

When accidents happen, it’s not wise to lament their existence, but rather celebrate in their exposure and revel in the situation you have in front of you to now work with. Particularly in art, for this is the journey.

Leiah Luz (see our previous shoots) and I did a shoot at the Vancouver Burlesque Center in the midst of darkness. Experimenting with lighting is something I don’t get a chance to do much, or really have that much drive to explore. But when it comes, it’s fun to see what magic can be made. After all, photography is all playing with light.

AlphaSiren is a Writer

Posted on 21st December 2013 in black and white, portraits & headshots

I connected with AlphaSiren (FB, Twitter, Instagram) a little while ago mostly because it turned out she was looking for a website to get built. Maybe that’s not all true. I read a few of her articles on HUSH first. I really dug them because they challenge society to think about how we’re living, and what we perceive in our current society.

AlphaSiren is a powerful writer exploring sex and relationships, feminism, and the alt-scene (of Vancouver). She unabashedly puts her money where her mouth is and writes about things she is genuinely interested in; exploring and sharing. I like this kind of writer, a very powerful combination.

After talking with her for a while – and submitting to her tenacious plan to conquer – we began to think of some projects we could work on together. The first one was a quick professional portrait shoot.

We initially planned to shoot in a café. Sunday afternoon they were full, so we headed over to Charles Bar in Gastown, Vancouver and began shooting [and some football]. Honestly, no better way to get into the mood with a glass of wine and large windows.

It was interesting for me to work on this more professional headshot/portrait stuff, as it’s something I’ve not had a lot of experience doing, but very interested in doing. I feel this style is formal but showing little touches of personality. That’s my goal always/anyways as a photographer.

Balloons & Bubble Gum With Miss Brooke

Posted on 19th August 2013 in fashion

I connected with Miss Brooke on Model Mayhem to work on my summer attitude style I’ve been wanting to explore with sleeveless crop tops and bubblegum badass.

I really enjoyed having such a large prop to use [balloons]. It really added some fun to it. I think I’ll be exploring this in more detail to come. All the photographs were taken in Fort George Park, in Prince George, BC.
